What does a Chartered Legal Executive (Conveyancing) do?

A Chartered Legal Executive specialising in conveyancing manages the legal aspects of buying, selling and transferring property.

They review and draft contracts, investigate title documents, carry out searches, liaise with lenders and estate agents, and make sure all legal requirements are met for a smooth property transaction.

Your route to authorisation

Plan your studies and supervised legal work together. Knowing which responsibilities and examples of work you need helps you build relevant experience while working towards the qualification.

Complete the required units of the Conveyancing Legal Practice Qualification, taking account of approved exemptions.

Career opportunities and practice rights

Once authorised by CILEX Regulation, you can carry out conveyancing within the scope of your practising certificate. Further training and authorisation can extend your practice rights.

On authorisation

Conveyancing practice rights: Carry out conveyancing as an authorised Chartered Legal Executive, with Commissioner for Oaths rights. Establishing your own law firm requires separate firm authorisation.

Recognised Chartered status

A professional identity recognised across the legal sector. Chartered Legal Executives work as fee earners, case handlers and specialist lawyers in law firms, in-house legal teams and public bodies.

Go further

Add further practice rights over time, for example probate or litigation, each requiring its own training and authorisation by CILEX Regulation. Chartered status counts when you go for partnership or senior roles.

Real story

“My LLB taught me the theory of Law but CILEx taught me the practice of it. I wouldn’t have gotten my current job without my CILEx qualification and my LTC course. The tutors were exceptionally helpful and supportive both during and even after completion of the course. I went from having two case files under my belt to now in excess of a hundred.”

who completed earlier CILEX qualifications with Law Training Centre and is now a Chartered Legal Executive in residential conveyancing at Direction Law.
