NALP Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technicians

This new qualification replaces the three different Level 3 qualifications (Certificate, Award & Diploma) and is designed to meet the needs of learners starting out on their legal career.

The NALP Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technicians aims to provide an excellent foundation of legal knowledge, covering the topics that are most needed as they embark on your chosen profession.

By completing this qualification, you will gain a recognised and respected qualification to aid you in entering and progressing your career as a paralegal. It is perfect for those starting out on their legal career in a paralegal role, or currently working in business administration, or secretarial services within the legal environment, as well as those who wish to enter into the profession and seek to develop their foundational knowledge of the English legal system, plus key skills such as how to carry out legal research.

What will you study?

There are four mandatory units required to complete the Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technicians.

The following is a summary of the units underpinning the NALP Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technicians with the Total Qualification Time (TQT). The TQT is a term used for qualifications regulated by Ofqual and is the total number of hours it is estimated that an average learner will take to complete a qualification.

The TQT for the Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technician is 368 hours. This is broken down as follows:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Law for Paralegals: To gain a detailed knowledge of the legal system in England and Wales (TQT 103 hours)
  • Unit 2 – Introduction to Professional Conduct for Paralegals: To gain knowledge of the responsibilities of paralegals in a professional setting including their ethical and codes of conduct duties (TQT 66 hours)
  • Unit 3 – Introduction to Law of Contract for Paralegals: To gain a clear understanding of the law of contract in England and Wales (TQT 107 hours)
  • Unit 4 – Introduction to Litigation and Dispute Resolution for Paralegals: To gain an understanding of the civil and criminal litigation process (TQT 92 hours)

 

Learners have a maximum of two years to complete the course from the date of enrolment, however most learners will complete within one year.

How will you be assessed?

The NALP Level 3 Certificate for Paralegal Technicians is assessed via multiple choice question papers (for all Units), which are undertaken monthly at pre-arranged dates/times, and written assignments (for Units 2, 3 and 4 at Level 3) which are undertaken on demand by the learner as they complete each unit of study.

  • Multiple choice question paper: The multiple-choice papers are taken via a secure proctoring service, at pre-arranged dates and times. Depending on the unit being assessed you will have either 45 or 60 minutes to complete the paper.
  • Assignment: You will have two weeks to complete and submit your response. Units 2, 3 & 4 have one assignment each, with a response limit of 2,000 words.
