Family Litigation Legal Practice Qualification

A clear, direct route to becoming a family litigator with practice rights.

Our CILEx Regulation-approved qualification meets the education requirements for authorisation as a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Family Litigation).

  • Study online around your work and other commitments, with flexibility to organise your learning.
  • Learn from practising lawyers who connect legal principles with the decisions you will make in family practice.

Authorisation also requires suitable legal experience, portfolio evidence and satisfaction of CILEx Regulation’s suitability requirements. You can build the required experience alongside your studies.

You do not need to complete CILEX’s CPQ or qualify as a solicitor through the SQE to obtain family litigation practice rights through this route.

What is a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Family Litigation)?

The professional role

A Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Family Litigation) is a specialist lawyer authorised by CILEx Regulation to conduct family litigation in their own right, without solicitor supervision, within the scope of their practising certificate.

This protected professional title identifies an authorised person for the reserved legal activity of conducting family litigation.

The work in practice

Family litigators advise clients on disputes involving relationships, finances and children. They explain the legal position, discuss available options and help clients make informed decisions about how to proceed.

Divorce

Financial settlements

Child arrangements

Domestic abuse injunctions

Care proceedings

Career opportunities and practice rights

Opportunity Scope or additional requirement
Take responsibility for family cases Once authorised, conduct family litigation in your own right within the scope of your practising certificate.
Progress in a firm or establish a practice Develop within a family team. Establishing your own law firm also requires separate firm authorisation.
Commissioner for Oaths Authorised Chartered Legal Executive Litigators (Family Litigation) also hold Commissioner for Oaths rights.
Represent clients as a court advocate Separate rights of audience are required; litigation authorisation alone does not confer them.
Add advocacy rights

Extend your practice into court advocacy through approved training, assessment and separate authorisation by CILEx Regulation. Advocacy is optional for this litigation route and can be pursued later.

Our Advocacy Skills Course will launch once approved by CILEx Regulation. Speak to us about planning advocacy training alongside your qualification and relevant work experience.

Progress to Higher Rights of Audience

Eligible family advocates can pursue Higher Rights of Audience through the civil route, after successfully completing the first renewal of their advocacy certificate. Further training, assessment and authorisation are required. Advocates with chambers-only rights are not eligible.
