Ann Nicholas — balancing work, motherhood and legal studies

Eighteen years ago, Ann Nicholas stumbled into the world of conveyancing while travelling in Dubai. A friend suggested the career path, and with nothing to lose, Ann returned to England and embarked on a journey that would evolve into a fulfilling career. Today, as a residential fee earner at Robinson Allfree, she handles all aspects of conveyancing, from freehold to leasehold transactions. Her story is one of persistence, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Ann’s introduction to conveyancing was unconventional. Without a traditional law degree, she initially pursued her legal career through the CILEX pathway. However, marriage, motherhood and the global recession meant she had to pause her studies until her employer encouraged her to formalise her knowledge with a CLC qualification.

Ann is now studying her CLC Level 6 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice with Law Training Centre. Her decision to enrol with us was driven by two key factors: clear communication, flexibility, and genuine care for students, and flexible payment options, Ann explains.

The fees were very flexible - payment plans could be put in place. The staff were very knowledgeable with what they are doing, and they truly care about their students. I felt very reassured when I contacted them.

Ann found the resources and support from Law Training Centre instrumental to her success. The course’s focus on residential conveyancing aligned perfectly with her career goals, and she found the tutor support to be a huge help during her studies: “The tutors are always approachable, always at the end of a telephone call or by email. If I did contact the tutor, I would get a response back the very next day, which was very reassuring. And the feedback was great – they’re very communicative.”

“The support you get from Law Training Centre is unparalleled to some of the other course providers, because the tutors and the staff are always happy to help, whether it’s by phone or by email. So you’re never really alone because you’ve got that background support whenever you need it.”

Balancing work, family life and studies wasn’t easy, but the structure of the course gave Ann the breathing room she needed: “I work full time. I’m also a mum. So my priorities are divided between my work and my child. But again, Law Training Centre know that people have difference paces that they can study at, and the course is structured to give you enough time to do the subjects that you need to qualify.”

What drives Ann? Her son. “I want to show him that age is not a barrier all the time. And if you want to study or qualify, there’s no better time to do it,” she reflects.

With just one module left to complete her CLC Level 6 qualification, Ann is poised to become a Licensed Conveyancer. Her qualification will not only validate her years of experience but will also enhance her ability to serve clients.

For Ann, the true joy of her profession lies in helping clients achieve their dreams. “When you’re helping someone buy their first home or you’re helping someone move out and go into their dream home, it gives me a lot of pleasure,” she shares.
