Civil Litigation Legal Practice Qualification

A clear, direct route to becoming a civil litigator with practice rights.

Our CILEx Regulation-approved qualification meets the education requirements for authorisation as a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Civil Litigation).

  • Study online around your professional and personal commitments, with flexibility to organise your learning.
  • Learn from practising lawyers who connect legal principles with the decisions you will make in civil practice.

Authorisation also requires suitable legal experience, portfolio evidence and satisfaction of CILEx Regulation’s suitability requirements. You can build the required experience alongside your studies.

You do not need to complete CILEX’s CPQ or qualify as a solicitor through the SQE to obtain civil litigation practice rights through this route.

What is a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Civil Litigation)?

A Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Civil Litigation) is a specialist lawyer authorised by CILEx Regulation to conduct civil litigation in their own right, without solicitor supervision, within the scope of their practising certificate.

This protected professional title identifies an authorised person for the reserved legal activity of conducting civil litigation.

The work in practice

Civil litigators advise individuals and businesses involved in disputes, helping them assess their position, understand the risks and decide how to proceed.

Contract disputes

Property disputes

Debt recovery

Personal injury

Landlord and tenant disputes

My CILEx qualification gave me the opportunity to get the position I’m in now.

Claire Smith, Studied earlier CILEX qualifications with Law Training Centre and progressed to a prosecutor role with the Metropolitan Police.

  • Assess claims and evidence to identify the legal issues and evaluate the client’s position.
  • Prepare statements of case and correspondence to progress matters effectively.
  • Negotiate settlements and consider mediation where an alternative to court may serve the client’s interests.
  • Manage litigation and prepare cases for court, explaining options, costs and procedural decisions to the client.

Career opportunities and practice rights

Opportunity Scope or additional requirement
Take responsibility for civil litigation Once authorised, conduct civil litigation in your own right within your practising certificate. Civil litigation rights exclude family proceedings.
Progress in a firm or establish a practice Develop within a litigation team. Establishing your own law firm also requires separate firm authorisation.
Commissioner for Oaths Authorised Chartered Legal Executive Litigators (Civil Litigation) also hold Commissioner for Oaths rights.
Represent clients as a court advocate Separate rights of audience are required; litigation authorisation alone does not confer them.
Extend your practice through advocacy

Add court advocacy through approved training, assessment and separate authorisation by CILEx Regulation. Advocacy is optional for this litigation route and can be pursued later.

Our Advocacy Skills Course will launch once approved by CILEx Regulation. Speak to us about planning advocacy training alongside your qualification and relevant work experience.

Progress to Higher Rights of Audience

Eligible civil advocates can apply for further training and assessment after successfully completing the first renewal of their advocacy certificate. Further authorisation is required. Advocates with chambers-only rights are not eligible for this progression.

It also really helped that, as they had practical experience working in law, they could also see things from my perspective.

Tasha Peeters, Completed an earlier CILEX Level 6 qualification with Law Training Centre.

What you will study

Combine a broad legal foundation with advanced study in contract,  tort, civil litigation and evidence.

Ten core units – Level 3, broadly A-level standard
This covers legal knowledge, professional skills, technology, ethics and accounting, with introductions to other areas of practice.

Four specialist units – Level 6, degree level
Contract Law; Tort Law; Civil Litigation; Rules of Evidence (Civil).

The core units help you recognise issues beyond the civil dispute, identify when another specialist’s advice is required and work effectively with colleagues. The specialist units develop your ability to analyse legal issues and apply the law to civil cases.

Level 6 describes the level of the specialist study; completing this qualification does not award a law degree.

Specialist units at Level 6

Contract Law

Analyse contractual obligations, identify breaches and assess the remedies available in a dispute.

Core units at Level 3

The Legal System of England and Wales

Understand the structure of the legal system, sources of law, jurisdiction and areas of legal practice.

Assessments you can plan around
  • Online examinations: Take remotely invigilated assessments without travelling to an examination centre.
  • Three assessment windows each year: Plan your preparation around published assessment dates.
  • Practice and feedback: Prepare with mock assessments and individual tutor feedback before the final assessment. Your first assessment attempt for each unit is included.
