Practice Rights Qualifications

Practice Rights Qualifications

A direct route to becoming a specialist lawyer with practice rights.

Build specialist legal knowledge and acquire the practice rights to take responsibility for your own cases in family, civil or criminal litigation, conveyancing or probate. Once authorised by CILEx Regulation, you can advise clients, manage your own caseload and conduct the work covered by your authorisation independently, without supervision by another lawyer.

Choose from five pathways: three leading to authorisation as a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator in family, civil or criminal litigation, and two leading to authorisation as a CILEx Practitioner in conveyancing or probate. These are Law Training Centre qualifications, approved by CILEx Regulation to meet the education requirements for authorisation in your chosen specialism. Study online around your work and other commitments.

To acquire practice rights, you must complete the qualification, meet the relevant experience, competence and suitability requirements, and obtain authorisation from CILEx Regulation. Independent practice is subject to your practising certificate and applicable regulatory requirements. Opening your own regulated firm requires separate firm authorisation.

What is this qualification

Law Training Centre offers five Practice Rights Qualifications approved by CILEx Regulation. The family, civil and criminal litigation qualifications meet the education requirements for authorisation as a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator. The conveyancing and probate qualifications meet the education requirements for authorisation as a CILEx Practitioner.

All five pathways lead towards authorisation with practice rights in your chosen specialism. Alongside the qualification, you must meet the relevant experience, competence and suitability requirements and obtain authorisation from CILEx Regulation.

Where the qualification takes you

Each qualification has two parts:

  • Core Legal Knowledge & Practice (Part 1) – Taught and assessed at Level 3, covering the legal knowledge and practical skills that underpin your specialist study.
  • Specialist Legal Knowledge & Practice (Part 2) – Taught and assessed at Level 6, developing your knowledge and practice in family, civil or criminal litigation, conveyancing or probate.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, approved exemptions may cover some or all of Core and relevant Specialist units.

You receive your diploma after completing the full qualification, taking account of approved exemptions. There is no interim diploma after Core.

Four stages to practice rights

  1. Required study: Complete your pathway qualification online with Law Training Centre, studying one unit at a time with the flexibility to enrol throughout the year.
  2. Relevant legal experience: Complete at least 2,300 hours of qualifying legal experience over a period of 3 years and apply to have it assessed by CILEx Regulation, providing the required supervisor reference. Suitable supervised legal work can contribute while you study.
  3. Competence evidence: Provide evidence of the required competencies using examples from your legal work, with support from your supervisor. Your portfolio can be developed alongside your qualification and qualifying experience.
  4. Application to CILEx Regulation: Once you have completed the qualification, experience and portfolio requirements, you can apply to CILEx Regulation for authorisation.

Authorised practice

Once authorised, you can undertake the activities covered by your authorisation, subject to your practising certificate and the applicable regulatory requirements. Establishing your own regulated firm requires separate firm authorisation.

As I already had a position in a firm and was earning a salary, CILEX was my preferred way forward. For me, it is important to be able to earn a salary and study at the same time.
