What is a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Criminal Litigation)?

A Chartered Legal Executive Litigator (Criminal Litigation) is a specialist lawyer authorised by CILEx Regulation to conduct criminal litigation in their own right, without solicitor supervision.

This protected professional title identifies you as an ‘authorised person’ for the reserved legal activity of conducting criminal litigation.

The work in practice

You advise clients throughout criminal investigations and proceedings, explaining their rights, the case against them and their options. Your responsibilities include:

  • Analysing evidence and identifying its implications for the case.
  • Interviewing witnesses and gathering relevant information.
  • Preparing legal documents and progressing proceedings.
  • Liaising with the police and Crown Prosecution Service as you prepare and manage cases.

Establishing your own law firm
Separate firm authorisation; individual practice rights do not authorise the firm.

Providing police-station advice and representation
The relevant accreditation or eligibility.

Representing clients as an advocate in court
Separate rights of audience.

Career opportunities and practice rights

Opportunity Scope or additional requirement
Conduct criminal litigation in your own right Once authorised, conduct criminal litigation in your own right within your practising certificate.
Progress in a firm or establish a practice Develop within a litigation team. Establishing your own law firm also requires separate firm authorisation.
Commissioner for Oaths Authorised Chartered Legal Executive Litigators (Criminal Litigation) also hold Commissioner for Oaths rights.

Extend your practice through advocacy

Advocacy rights enable you to represent clients in court. They require approved training, assessments, the relevant work experience and separate authorisation by CILEx Regulation.

Advocacy is optional: it is not required to obtain criminal litigation practice rights and can be pursued later.

Our Advocacy Skills Course will launch once approved by CILEx Regulation. Speak to us about planning your progression and the experience required for your intended advocacy route.

Progress to Higher Rights of Audience

Eligible criminal advocates can subsequently work towards Higher Rights of Audience in criminal proceedings, after the first renewal of their advocacy certificate. This requires further training, assessment and authorisation.

Your route to authorisation

Plan your studies and supervised legal work together. Knowing which responsibilities and case examples you need helps you build relevant experience while working towards the qualification.

Step 1: Complete your CILEx Regulation qualification

Complete the required units of the Criminal Litigation Practice Rights Qualification, taking account of approved exemptions.

What you will study

The qualification combines a broad legal foundation with advanced study in criminal law, litigation and evidence.

Part 1: Core Legal Knowledge & Practice
10 units · Taught and assessed at Level 3
The legal knowledge and professional skills required by CILEx Regulation, including introductory study in conveyancing, wills and probate.

Part 2: Specialist Legal Knowledge & Practice

The core units help you recognise legal issues beyond a criminal case, identify when another specialist’s advice is required and collaborate effectively with colleagues across the firm.

The specialist units develop your ability to analyse criminal law, evaluate evidential issues and apply legal principles to practical cases.

Level 6 describes the level of the specialist study; completing this qualification does not award a law degree. You receive your diploma when you complete the full qualification, taking account of approved exemptions. There is no interim diploma after Part 1.
