The power of practice: How mock exams can prepare you for SQE success

Passing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) isn’t just about knowing the law – it’s about mastering exam technique. That’s where mock exams and dedicated SQE mock courses, such as Law Training Centre’s SQE1 and SQE2 Just Mocks, can make all the difference.

The Solicitor’s Qualifying Examination

The SQE exams are challenging and this is evident in the pass rates, especially this year.  The SQE exams are split into two stages which are the SQE1 and the SQE2.  SQE1 tests functioning legal knowledge (FLK) through multiple choice questions, and SQE2 tests practical legal skills through written and oral tasks. It is a requirement of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) that candidates pass both the SQE1 and SQE2 examinations to qualify.

What are mock exams?

Mock exams are designed as a practice test that simulates how the real exam will be. They are a useful preparation tool for students as they give them a realistic sense of what to expect when they sit their main exam. They often follow the same format, timing and level of difficulty as the actual exam and you can do them under exam conditions as if you were sitting the real thing.

Why are mock exams useful?

Learners often find themselves fighting against the clock and trying to cram every single bit of legal terminology into their brains, but all this does is increase stress! Mock exams give learners the chance to test their knowledge in a timed setting, similar to the real thing with simulated exam pressure.

Doing mock exams are a great way to identify gaps in your knowledge, to enable you to focus on areas that you need to revise a little more. They also help to practise better time management and you’ll likely find that you know more than you think. Mocks are a great confidence builder! An increase in confidence means a decrease in anxiety which is exactly what you want when it comes to sitting your SQE exams.

“The mock questions and the mock exams were really essential. Having the ability to practise time and time again, applying what you had learned to new problems, really helped me to pass” – Katy Turquoise, Law Training Centre SQE Learner

Law Training Centre’s just mocks courses are unique with tutor support to guide you through the process  and are designed to mirror the real exam format. Another great course feature is that you get feedback on your mocks which helps to highlight your strengths and weaknesses and identify areas that you may need to revise further.
