Failed SQE1? Here’s what to do next…

Failing SQE1 can feel like a major setback, but it’s important to remember it’s not the end of your qualifying journey.

Many aspiring solicitors don’t achieve the results they hoped for on their first attempt. The SQE is a challenging assessment, and one result does not define your future in law. Whether you’re determined to continue with the SQE or you’re considering an alternative route, there are still plenty of options available to you.

Time to reassess

While it’s natural to feel disappointed, this moment can also be a valuable opportunity. Instead of viewing it as a failure, try to see it as a chance to:

  • Reassess your study strategy
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Reset your mindset with a more positive approach
  • Explore alternative legal qualification pathways

With the right next steps, you can turn this experience into a stepping stone toward success.

Option 1: Retake SQE1

One failed attempt does not mean the end of your SQE journey. Aspiring solicitors can sit the SQE assessments up to three times before being required to take a six-year break. Many candidates improve significantly on their second attempt, especially after refining their preparation strategy

How should you prepare for a resit?

Before jumping back in, take time to reflect on your previous approach:

  • What worked well in your study plan?
  • Where were your weaker areas?
  • Did you have enough time, structure and support?

Focusing on these questions will help you build a more effective and targeted revision plan for your next attempt.

What if you passed part of SQE1?

If you’ve already passed FLK1 or FLK2, you may not need to start from scratch.

Instead, you could benefit from a partial preparation course that focuses only on the assessment you need to retake. This allows you to concentrate your time and energy where it matters most.

Law Training Centre offers discounted SQE1 preparation courses for students retaking either FLK1 or FLK2 – helping you move forward efficiently and cost-effectively. This option is ideal for those who previously self-studies or trained elsewhere and now want supported preparation. If you’d like to study just FLK1 or FLK2, enquire with our team today.

Option 2: Consider alternative routes

If the SQE route no longer feels right for you, that’s okay!

The SQE is not the only pathway to a successful legal career. In fact, alternative routes may better suit your learning style, career goals or personal circumstances.

What are the alternatives?

You could consider:

These pathways are well-respected within the legal profession and can offer more flexible routes to qualification. In some cases, passing part of the SQE1 (FLK1 or FLK2) may even provide exemptions or advantages, depending on the route you choose.

This isn’t the end of your legal career

Failing SQE1 doesn’t close doors. It simply means it’s time to reassess which one is right for you and your goals.

Whether you decide to retake the exam or explore a different qualification route, the most important thing is making an informed choice that aligns with your goals.
