What is a CILEX Practitioner in Conveyancing

A CILEX Practitioner (Conveyancing) is a specialist lawyer authorised by CILEx Regulation to undertake reserved conveyancing work in their own right, within the scope of their practising certificate.

You manage the legal work involved in buying, selling and transferring property, explaining risks and advising clients as the transaction progresses.

The work in practice

Investigate title and property information, identifying issues that could affect the transaction.

Review contracts, searches and enquiries, assessing their significance for the client.

Liaise with lenders, estate agents and other lawyers to progress the matter.

Prepare for exchange, completion and registration, keeping clients informed about decisions and next steps.

The reserved legal activity is known as reserved instrument activities. Conveyancing authorisation does not itself confer the right to conduct litigation or represent clients as an advocate in court.

This is a CILEx Regulation route. Qualification and licensing through the Council for Licensed Conveyancers are separate, with their own requirements.

Career opportunities and practice rights

Build towards responsibility for property transactions within a law firm or conveyancing team. Practitioner and Chartered Legal Executive routes can lead to the same conveyancing practice rights; their academic requirements and professional titles differ.

Opportunity Scope or additional requirement
Take responsibility for conveyancing Once authorised, undertake conveyancing in your own right without solicitor supervision, within the scope of your practising certificate.
Develop your role within a firm Build towards greater responsibility in a property team as your expertise and experience develop.
Establish your own practice Reserved services for the public must be delivered through an appropriately regulated practice. Individual authorisation does not authorise a law firm; firm authorisation is separate.
Act as a Commissioner for Oaths Authorised CILEX Practitioners in conveyancing also hold Commissioner for Oaths rights.

Progression to Chartered Legal Executive status

After qualifying as a CILEX Practitioner (Conveyancing), you can begin working towards Chartered Legal Executive status at any time. Your existing legal study can count towards this progression, with additional academic and regulatory requirements to complete before that status can be awarded.

Qualify as a Probate Practitioner

You can also build on your conveyancing qualification to become a CILEX Practitioner (Probate). Relevant units completed during your conveyancing studies can provide exemptions from the probate qualification, reducing the study you need to complete and helping you progress more quickly.

We will confirm your exemptions and remaining units before you enrol. Probate practice rights require relevant experience, evidence of competence and separate authorisation by CILEx Regulation. Further study and regulatory charges apply.

Your route to authorisation

Plan your study, supervised legal work and competency portfolio together. Understanding the practical requirements early helps you identify suitable work and collect useful evidence as you progress.

Step 1: Complete your qualification

Complete the required units of the Conveyancing Practitioner Qualification, taking account of approved exemptions. Your studies develop the technical knowledge needed for this specialist route.

Qualifying can be much more accessible than you think.

Mikayla Hamilton, completed earlier CILEX study with Law Training Centre while working at Boys & Maughan. Her story concerns that earlier qualification, not this Practitioner course.

What you will study

A focused legal foundation with advanced study in conveyancing.

Your studies are organised into Core Legal Knowledge and Specialist Legal Knowledge & Practice. Five core units establish the legal knowledge and professional skills needed for this route. Five specialist units develop your ability to analyse property issues and apply the law to conveyancing transactions.

Core Legal Knowledge
Part 1 · Five units · Taught and assessed at Level 3
The legal system, an introduction to conveyancing, legal skills and technology, accounting, and professional conduct. Level 3 is broadly A-level standard.

Specialist Legal Knowledge & Practice
Part 2 · Five units · Taught and assessed at Level 6
Contract Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts, Landlord and Tenant, and Conveyancing Transactions in England and Wales. Level 6 describes degree-level study; completing the qualification does not award a law degree.

The Practitioner route has five fewer general core units than the Chartered Legal Executive route, while retaining the specialist conveyancing study. It provides a shorter academic route to specialist authorisation; it does not itself confer Chartered Legal Executive status.

Specialist Legal Knowledge & Practice – Part 2 taught and assessed at Level 6

Contract Law

Understand how contracts are formed, interpreted and brought to an end, and assess the remedies available when obligations are breached.

Core Legal Knowledge – Part 1 taught and assessed at Level 3

The Legal System of England and Wales

Understand how the legal system is organised, how law is made and applied, and how courts and legal professionals contribute to legal practice.

Learning and assessment

Study online and prepare for remotely invigilated assessments at scheduled sittings. The course combines knowledge-based questions with opportunities to apply the law and communicate advice.

  • Core general units: Multiple-choice, single best answer and short-answer questions.
  • Core skills units: Single best answer, short-answer questions and written advice.
  • Specialist units: Single best answer, short-answer questions and written advice.

The pass mark is 60% for each unit. Your course fee includes the first assessment attempt for each required unit, plus mock assessments with individual tutor feedback to guide your preparation.

Your timetable depends on your remaining units, assessment dates and study commitment. Completing the academic qualification and obtaining authorisation are separate milestones.

Entry requirements and exemptions

Entry requirements

You do not need a law degree, previous legal qualifications or legal work experience to enrol. You can begin as a school leaver, a career changer or someone already working in law.

Suitable supervised legal work is required for authorisation and can be gained alongside your studies. We can help you understand how that practical requirement fits your plans.

Exemptions that recognise your previous study

Relevant legal study can reduce your remaining course requirements and fee. We review the subjects you have passed, their level and how they were assessed, including individual units from an unfinished qualification.

Your previous study What we review
Law degree, GDL, PGDL or LPC Your certificate, transcript and relevant module information.
Overseas legal study Your qualifications, transcripts and module information, including the legal system studied.
Passed SQE assessments Your results and available subject-performance information.
CILEX, CPQ, NALP, CLC or other legal qualifications The exact qualification and individual units passed. Include relevant probate study.
Legal apprenticeship Your qualification and assessment records, including separately awarded units.

Where previous study covers most of a unit but leaves specific gaps, we may include the remaining learning within your agreed pathway. Any required top-up study forms part of that pathway rather than a separate bridging course.

Request a free review of your previous study

Send your certificates and transcripts, including where and when you studied. We will confirm your exemptions, remaining study and course fee in writing before you enrol.

Exemptions recognise academic learning. They do not remove the separate experience, competence, suitability or authorisation requirements.
