Become a Licensed Probate Practitioner with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC)

We are delighted to announce that we are working with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) with LTC having been accredited by SQA to deliver qualifications to become a Licensed Conveyancer and a Licensed Probate Practitioner.

The CLC route to qualifying as a specialist in Conveyancing and Probate is a flexible route for anyone who wishes to become a qualified practitioner in one or both of these areas of Law.

It is an excellent path to qualify as a lawyer not only for those with no legal qualifications, but also for paralegals with some legal qualification who wish to advance their career by becoming a Licensed Conveyancer and/or Probate Practitioner.
The cost for both Level 4 and Level 6 Diplomas is less than a year’s university tuition, and can be spread flexibly throughout the duration of your studies.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When can I enrol and can I start whenever I want?

You can enrol and start at any time.

How are the course units delivered?

We have designed a flexible approach to studying the CLC units with a supported distance-learning model which blends the best of e-learning and tutor support, enabling you to study at your own pace while at the same time having unlimited support from our experienced tutors.

At Level 4, all units apart from one, are assessment-based and therefore you have the flexibility to complete these assessments in the comfort of your own environment.
At Level 6, all units are exam-based and they can be sat in any of our exam venues across the country, including London, Kent, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol.

For each unit you study, you will receive the following:

• A step-by-step study plan, setting out a suggested programme of study for your unit
• Pre-recorded lectures, covering the learning outcomes for the unit and the key legal points that need to be studied to ensure your success in the exams;
• 12-month access to all online materials and resources
• Group tutorial workshops (webinars), discussing the legal theory that was covered in the pre-recorded lectures, enabling candidates to have all their questions answered
• One to one tutorials with your course tutor (webinars)
• Additional checklists, summaries and study materials to help you prepare for your exams
• The official SQA course manual
• Weekly mini-assessments to ensure you are on track with your studying
• Intensive revision sessions
• An interactive online forum where you can interact with other students on the course
• The provision of the final unit assessment and certificate
• Exams held in Kent, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol

How long will it take for me to complete each unit?

Level 4 units will normally take 6 months to complete, whereas Level 6 units will take between 6-8 months to complete, depending on previous knowledge of the legal area.
We advise all our students to study a maximum of 2 units at a time. Completing all 8 units will take, on average, approximately 3 years.
All our students receive 12 months access to our online materials and resources allowing them to complete their qualifications at a pace that suits their needs.

Who are the tutors?

All our tutors are law lecturers and practitioners with a wealth of experience in the legal sector. They include firm partners, solicitors and barristers with subject experience, who have been trained to deliver our courses in an interactive and engaging manner.

How much tutor support can I expect to receive?

You will receive bi-monthly live tutorials to have all your questions answered. In addition, you will have access to a personal tutor that you can reach by email/phone/Skype with your queries.

What additional support will be available for exams and assessments?

You will have access to mini-assessments as well as mock exams to ensure you are prepared for your final assessment.

How will the courses be examined?

For the Level 4 Diplomas and, with the exception of the accountancy unit, you will be examined via a number of assessments, which will take approximately 2 weeks to complete before submitting them for marking. The accountancy unit is assessed via an exam and it will need to be taken in one of our exam centres. All Level 6 units are assessed via exams and can be sat in one of our exam centres.

What happens if I fail an exam?

We feel personally invested in our students’ success and, as such, in the highly unlikely event that you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, you can re-submit your assessment for free or, if the unit was assessed via an exam, re-enrol for the unit at no extra cost.

Do I need to have any prior qualifications?

We advise that all students have a minimum GCSE, or equivalent, qualification in English and Maths.
You do not need to have any prior legal qualifications or practical legal experience to start the courses.

What happens once I complete all my exams – Practical Experience?

Once you have completed both Level 4 and Level 6 assessments and exams, you will obtain the Level 6 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice and/or the Level 6 Diploma in Probate Law and Practice which concluded the academic stage.

If you haven’t already done so, you will then need to acquire 1200 hours practical experience in either Probate or Conveyancing (or both) in order to apply to CLC to become Licensed. Practical experience gained prior to or during your studies may be counted, however  you may only submit your application after successfully completing all your academic units.

Practical experience can be completed anywhere that deals with provision in conveyancing/probate services headed by a qualified person. The scope of completing practical experience is not limited to a legal firm; it ranges from housing associations and legal authorities, across banks and building societies, to property development companies and even railways and airports with in-house legal departments. For more guidance on practical experience please visit the CLC guidance page.

Once you have become Licensed, you will be qualified as a professional property or probate lawyer to undertake unsupervised legal work in those areas anywhere in England and Wales.

If I have already gained some legal qualifications, am I eligible for any exemptions?

If you have existing legal qualifications, you may be eligible for a number of exemptions. Please contact us with details of your prior qualifications for guidance on exemptions.

Courses run throughout the year. Contact us to discuss your subject choices and apply now.
